  What is Ego?

The Word ' EGO' in English comes from the Latin word meaning 'I' .In Sanskrit ' EGO'  means Ahankar. A common definition of 'EGO' is similar to the word 'self-importance'.When someone thinks too highly of themselves, you might say a big 'EGO'.Someone who constantly thinks of themselves as better and more important than other people might be called an 'EGOMANIAC'.Dealing with someone with superior attitude is not easy .It can cause you to feel resentment and anger and it can affect the way you think of yourself.Ego can also be defined as a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance.Although ,the word ego often carries a nagative connotation-as in egocentric or egoistical, actually, the ego has both positive and negative aspects. From the positive prospective, ego simply means a solid, healthy and strong sense of self but mostly ego gives negative things only(I-ness).Ego has become a very common word.People use it freely, feeling they know exactly what it means.Psychologists use this term in different way than its common use.Depending on the way you define ego,you may think it is something desirable or something to be avoided at any cost.

It is said that the five enemies in spiritual path are Ego,Lust,Greed, Attachment ,Anger.

As discussed above, the egoness is the materialistic cause, created by mind and intelligence on the spirit but the soul (Atama) is just an observer,The egoness and lustness not only effects the present life but it's influence remains even after the death(rebirth) in the human beings. Therefore,a detailed discussion is enumerated in the present discussions. In the SATTVIC Gunas people, the ego is limited to only for their purity of thought, happiness and knowledge. However ,RAJSIC and Tamsic Gunas personalities, their spiritual life is hindered due to their unlimited and excessive egoness. Therefore, the characteristic of egoness in RAJSIC and Tamsic Gunas people are described here in detail. It should be clarified here that the jealousness is a part of egoness.

The gruesome ugliness of the inner nature of pure materialistic,as he struts(arrogant) about the fields of his achievements, cannot be expressed better than in Bhagwat Geeta. For a more vivid and thorough depiction of the mental control of the egocentric people, for a clear description of the quality and texture of his activities in society, one has to go ransacking the entire existing literature of all the languages in the world, only to fail to find a parallel argument.
